Few flooring options are as versatile as concrete grinding. This process transforms rough concrete surfaces into consistent, level, scratch free surfaces.
Whether dealing with new concrete slabs or restoring old, damaged ones, grinding can create a smooth surface with a unique industrial look. Even worn or chipped concrete can be repaired and ground to achieve a fresh, durable finish.
Whether you’re resurfacing a concrete slab in Denver, Colorado, or preparing a floor for new installation, concrete grinding ensures long-lasting results.
Benefits of Grinding Concrete:
- Smooth surface: Creates a consistent, scratch free finish.
- Concrete resurfacing: Restores worn concrete slabs to improve aesthetics and functionality
- Trip hazard removal: Eliminates uneven areas to reduce safety risks and allow equipment to travel over transitions smoothly and easily
- Concrete repair: Fixes damaged or cracked concrete for a uniform look.
- Durable flooring system: Increases the longevity of existing concrete.
- Improved concrete slab appearance: Transforms rough slabs into attractive floors.
- Surface prep: Ideal for preparing floors for new coatings or treatments as well as removing any existing coatings, mastic, thinset or other inconsistencies.
- Top layer refinement: Removes imperfections in the top layer of concrete and/or exposes aggregate in the slab to the desired degree.
- Cost-effective alternative: Cheaper than replacing the entire slab.
- Environmentally friendly: Avoids the need for new materials.
- Tenant turnover option: Ground and sealed concrete is a great way to set up your commercial or industrial space for the next tenants and to reduce vacancies.
A High-Quality, Long-Lasting, Low-Maintenance Flooring Solution
Concrete grinding creates a durable, smooth, and unique floor surface that can last for decades. Unlike other flooring options like tile or carpet, a properly ground and finished concrete slab can retain its appearance for 50 years or more. This longevity makes it an ideal flooring solution for commercial environments.
Easy Maintenance with Concrete Grinding
After the concrete grinding process, maintaining your floor is simple. Routine cleaning involves mopping or using an auto-scrubber—no need for heavy cleaning, waxing, or stripping.
Concrete Grinding Limitations
While concrete grinding offers a robust and attractive finish, certain applications may require additional protection. For environments needing enhanced chemical resistance or non-skid properties, such as kitchens or labs, urethane floor coatings or other specialized coatings may be more suitable.
by Concrete Grinding Process
At General Industrial Flooring, we utilize large industrial diamond grinders and hand grinders, all attached to HEPA vacuums, to deliver high-quality concrete grinding services. This ensures that dust and debris are minimized during the surface prep process.
Initial Grinding Phase
The process begins with aggressive diamond grinding tooling to smooth the concrete surface and prepare the top layer. Any remnants of glue, mastic, or thinset from prior flooring are completely removed, leaving a clean concrete slab ready for the next steps.
Aggregate Exposure
During this initial grinding, we can add additional passes with coarse diamond tooling to remove top layers of concrete to expose more ggregate, giving you options such as a cream finish, salt and pepper, small aggregate, or large aggregate, depending on your preferred look.
Patching, Repairs, and Joint Filling
During the concrete grinding process, we can address any gaps and voids with a cement patch or urethane material for concrete repair. We can also fill joints with polyurea or other suitable materials, ensuring a seamless and even finish.
Final Grinding and Polishing
Typically the goal of ground concrete is to achieve a scratch free finish. If you desire, we can then move from the harsher cutting diamonds into resin polishing diamonds to create a polished concrete floor. For this process, we use increasingly finer resin bonded diamond to create a smooth surface with the desired level of gloss. If concrete staining is desired, it takes place at this stage to enhance the look. We progress through grit levels—200, 400, 800, and higher—depending on your preference for gloss and finish.
Customizable Appearance with Concrete Grinding
One of the most appealing features of concrete grinding is the ability to customize the appearance of the concrete floor to meet specific aesthetic preferences. Through concrete grinding, you can achieve anything from a uniform look to a more varied, industrial style.
Clients can also choose the level of aggregate exposure to create different visual effects—from minimal aggregate for a smooth, refined surface to large aggregate exposure for a more textured look. The level of gloss is customizable as well, with options ranging from matte and low-luster finishes to a high-gloss, mirror-like shine. Additionally, floor stains can be applied to add color, further expanding design possibilities.
Each of these customization choices—aggregate exposure, gloss level, and stain options—allows for a unique, tailored floor surface. According to standardized definitions provided by the Concrete Polishing Council, grinding to different depths exposes different layers of the concrete slab. The deeper the grind, the more aggregate is exposed, revealing a more distinctive look in the top layer.
Aggregate Exposure in Concrete Grinding
Concrete grinding offers a range of aggregate exposure options to customize the look of your floor:
- Class A: Cream Finish – This minimal grinding approach removes very little from the concrete surface, resulting in a smooth, uniform appearance with no aggregate exposure. Ideal for clients looking for a sleek, polished look without visible texture.
- Class B: Salt and Pepper – A more aggressive grind that removes approximately 1/16″ of the concrete surface. This level reveals fine sands and small aggregate, achieving a subtle, salt-and-pepper texture.
- Class C: Medium Aggregate – Grinding to about 1/8″ depth exposes medium-sized aggregate, including 1/8″–1/4″ pebbles with occasional larger pieces. At this depth, a urethane backfill may be needed to fill any pinholes or surface inconsistencies for a seamless finish.
- Class D: Coarse Aggregate – This deeper grind removes about 1/4″ of material, revealing larger stones (1/2″ or more in diameter) combined with smaller aggregate. This creates a bold, textured appearance for a unique industrial look..
